Smart Colorado has a billboard warning parents about marijuana-infused candy given out to children for Halloween. The Denver Police Department released a video on the same subject.
But is this much ado about nothing? Although they’ve been warning parents about this for years, there’s never been a documented case of someone slipping marijuana edibles into an unsuspecting child’s trick-or-treat bag.
This is nothing more than fear-mongering and continuing to perpetuate the stereotype that marijuana consumers are criminals out to corrupt your kids.
So what’s a parent to do? Take reasonable precautions, just like you would anytime. If they’ve got candy that’s not in its original wrapper or from someone you know, don’t let them eat it. When in doubt, throw it out.
