Video series: Cannabis use during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Marijuana-Pregnancy

The use of cannabis during pregnancy and breastfeeding continues to be a very controversial issue. Because marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug (no medical value, high chance of abuse) according to the federal government, women have been persecuted and prosecuted for their choice. Despite research proving medical efficacy and safety, this bias continues even today in states like Colorado that have legalized the medical and/or recreational use of marijuana.

Becca Williams has produced this excellent 3-part series on the use of cannabis during pregnancy and breastfeeding. I think you’ll find it quite informative.

Part 1: Moms & Marijuana: Trying to Fly Under the Radar
“We’re not talking about out-of-control, highly dysfunctional women addicts desperate for a fix. No, the women I’m referring to are an entirely different type.”

Part 2: Ancient Cultures on Motherhood & Marijuana
“I have a splendid idea! Let’s take a ride through time and look at new moms around the world who’ve been using marijuana for thousands of years.”

Part 3: The Research
“Here’s some of the courageous — in fact — ballsy healers who are pioneering the way today on the research regarding this.”

The medical community, along with child welfare, argue that they don’t know for sure that cannabis causes harm, but they think it could, and since there’s not sufficient proof that it doesn’t, they continue the unreasonable prohibition against cannabis. (Notice the circular logic?) In the meantime, loving mothers are losing their children and their liberty, all because the standard of proof for the safety and effectiveness of cannabis is above and beyond that expected for pharmaceutical drugs.

Case in point: “A recent study casts doubt on the safety of Zofran, a popular morning sickness and nausea drug sometimes prescribed to pregnant women — and findings suggest the drug increases the risk of severe birth defects and injury to the mother.” (DrugWatch.com) Despite warnings, Zofran is still on the market and prescribed off-label for severe morning sickness.

I’m reminded of the quote by Peter McWilliams: “Nausea is an unsolved problem of medicine. Marijuana is the finest anti-nausea medication known to science.” And yet the medical community is still in denial, and mothers are still losing their children because they made the choice to use a safer, more effective medication.

Can you please stop taking our children away and putting moms in jail because you think cannabis might be bad with little, if any, data to support that claim? Show me that it’s a better choice to threaten a mother with the loss of her children, stop her from nursing her newborn, force her to use commercial formula, and interfere in the bond between mother and child simply because she uses cannabis. Prove to me first that the use of cannabis poses such a significant risk to the mother or child, that this is such a grave public health menace, that it warrants such drastic measures.

Thank you Becca for allowing me to share your videos and insight.
